香港地處南方，擁有背山面海的地理環境，遠離統治權力的核心，較少受到正統的儒家文化影響，表現出更多非正統、非規範的獨特文化內涵。經世致用的作風，以及講求實惠的享樂精神成為香港文化最基本的核心。
然而，1843年簽訂的《南京條約》將香港割讓給英國，西方文化入侵香港這片土地，在政治制度、法律制度、經濟制度、教育制度等方面影響着香港。西方文化的強大壓力，使香港長期處於一種殖民文化的重壓之中。中西文化的融攝與合流給香港帶來一種特殊的新的人文格局，造成了香港作為世界經濟樞紐地位的一個華洋雜處、東西並存的社會面貌和文化形態。

Historically, Hong Kong
is a very special place. First, it was deeply influenced by Chinese traditional
culture, and then influenced by western culture, forming its unique cultural
form.
Hong Kong is located
in the south, with the geographical environment of the back of the mountain,
away from the core of the ruling power, less affected by the orthodox Confucian
culture, showing more unorthodox, non-standard and unique cultural
connotations. The style and emphasis on affordable pleasure became the core of
the basic spirit of Hong Kong culture.
However, the Treaty
of Nanjing, signed in 1843, ceded Hong Kong to the United Kingdom, and the
western culture invaded the land of Hong Kong. It affected Hong Kong in
political, legal, economic and educational systems. The strong pressure of
western culture has caused Hong Kong to be under the weight of a colonial
culture for a long time. Chinese and Western cultural assimilation and the
confluence of Hong Kong bringing a special new cultural pattern, resulting in
Hong Kong as the world's economic hub of a multi-national society and culture.
